.Ten Reasons to Zero In on ZERO1

7. New Uses for Old Media
Immersive is an overused word for art installations, but Spanish artist Daniel Canogar’s The Film Trilogy truly bathes the viewer in a mesmerizing sensory wash. The Trilogy, showing at Montalvo Arts Center as a peripheral part of ZERO1, uses some of the physical manifestations of the movies to evoke the history of the medium. In Flicker, long, slender threads of 35mm film zigzag from the floor to the ceiling; a projector casts images drawn from the silent era up and down the sprocketed strips in rapid patterns that sometimes resemble illuminated rainfall, sometimes solid bands of intense white coming and going like lightning streaks. The countdown on film leaders flashes stroboscopically on the wall behind the strips set to an electronic score.
