Bill Viola
Bill Viola (b.1951) is considered a pioneer in the medium of video art and is internationally recognized as one of today's leading artists. He has been instrumental in the establishment of video as a vital form of contemporary art, and in so doing has helped to greatly expand its scope in terms of technology, content, and historical reach. For over 35 years he has created videotapes, architectural video installations, sound environments, electronic music performances, flat panel video pieces, and works for television broadcast.
In 2006 Viola began work on a new project. The Night Journey has been conceived as using video game technologies, but stretching the boundaries of what games are with its unique content and mechanics. The user's voyage through The Night Journey takes them across an ever-changing landscape, a space without a defined geography that has more mental and spiritual qualities than geographical ones. The core mechanic in the game is the act of traveling, rather than the reaching of certain destinations the trip along a path of enlightenment. A design phase for the first level of the game has been developed at the Game Innovation Lab of the Interactive Media Division in the USC School of Cinema-Television. Led by game designer, Professor Tracy Fullerton, the team is exploring potential game mechanics and transformations within a 3D game space, focusing on how to elicit the sense of an emergent, responsive environment for the Journey.
David Kelley
David Kelley, Founder & Chairman, IDEO; Founder, Stanford's Institute of Design (the "d" school). As founder of one of the world's leading design firms, Kelley will explain the roles that people can play in an organization to foster creativity and use design thinking to transform their corporate culture. IDEO's renowned company culture has given rise to the Apple mouse, the first laptop computer, the Palm V and hundreds of other standard setting designs. In April 2006, IDEO ranked #15 in Business Week's most innovative companies in the world.
Kelley now heads Stanford's d.school, and he is on a mission to add "design thinking" to Stanford's existing competence of teaching analytical thinking. This will result in students who create delightful design experiences and embrace and promote a culture of innovation.
Bombastic Effects
Survival Research LabsBehind South Hall Fri, Aug 11, 10 pm
Ticket Price: $25
Survival Research Labs (SRL) brings a newly conceived performance full of its legendary machines, flame-throwers, and bombastic sound to ZeroOne San Jose/ISEA2006 Symposium. Some things are purely mythic, like Survival Research Labs, which springs from the shell of abandoned buildings and monster robotic history. Humans are only present as audience or operators; in this show it's all about the large scale. As described by founder Mark Pauline an SRL performance is comprised of "ritualistic interactions between machines, robots, and special effects devices." Whatever else you call it, (and the title won't be announced until just before the show); we call it big fun, exciting, and something you won't want to miss. It's monster machine, meets hovercraft, meets huge sculptural creatures, meets fire... see you there.
Survival Research Laboratories is a performance art group founded by Mark Pauline in November 1978. Through early 2004, SRL has conducted 45 shows throughout the world.
Post-Symposium
Bleeding Edge Festival
Montalvo Arts Center, Saratoga
Sun, Aug 13, Noon—10 pm
Ticket Price: $50, $40 for ISEA registrants or $25 with purchase of festival gold pass at the ZeroOne Festival Box Office.
Artistic expression goes beyond the cutting edge with the Bleeding Edge Festival. The festival features 25 artists performing on four stages throughout the Montalvo grounds in Saratoga, only 20 minutes from downtown San Jose. A free shuttle service to the festival will run on the hour from the Convention Center turnaround starting at 11 a.m.,
If the term "cutting edge" identifies the most adventurous and progressive forms of artistic expression, the Bleeding Edge Festival promises to be an exploration of the messy aftermath, the fluidity of genres that follows in the wake of the transgressive cultural moment: post-electronic, post-independent, post-fringe. The festival is divided into two distinct categories, "experimental electronica" and "indie rock."
Participating artists include: Yo La Tengo, Isis, Brightblack Morning Light, Black Dice, Matmos and Zeena Parkins, Luke Temple, Skoltz_Kolgen, Frank Bretschneider, Sunroof!, Tim Hecker, Portable, Frivolous, Richard Chartier, Greg McGrath, The Chemistry Set, Robert Stillman's Horses, The Avett Brothers, Luther Russell and Flying. Also appearing on festival stages are the four winners of a juried competition, who will receive a two-week stay in Whitefish, Montana, to record at the state-of-the-art SnowGhost Sound Studios.
Artists subject to change. For complete details, go to bleedingedgefestival.org. For artists, music and more, go to myspace.com/bleedingedgefestival
The Bleeding Edge Festival is curated by Brett Allen and Robert Crouch.

Matt Davignon has developed a unique form of improvisation over the last 10 years, focusing on textures, arrhythmic patterns and musical imperfections. Combining acoustic and electronic elements, he attempts to create dynamic, biological music from seemingly limited source material.
Rick Walker's Loop.pooL is a fascinating and creative one-man journey through the world of sound and rhythm. Using digital live looping technology and a lot of audience interactive participation, Rick is able to play a completely different set of instruments on every single song in this early twenty first century version of a "one person's band."
