How to find sports clubs of all types around Silicon Valley


Almaden Cycle Touring Club Group of almost 1,000 riders in the South Bay. Membership is $20 for individuals or $25 for families. Club newsletter contains monthly schedule, which usually is about 150 rides. www.actc.org.

Alto Velo Bicycle Racing Club Los Altos-based riding club focused on master's and women's racing. Membership opens in September for the following year and is $75. Weekly rides and meetings are open to the public. www.altovelo.org.

Bay Area Backpackers Club Club has over 400 members and organizes trips and exchanges information in an online forum. Periodic planning and social meetings. http://bayarealinkup.com/group.php?id=2.

BayLands FrontRunners A running/walking club for gays and lesbians with weekly events at Baylands Nature Preserve in Palo Alto and other social events. Membership is open to anyone. Dues are $24 per year. www.baylands.org.

Los Gatos Bicycle Racing Club Organized rides every weekend, meetings held first Monday of each month. New membership fee is $90. www.lgbrc.org.

Pacific Masters Swimming Local clubs hold open water fitness swims, fitness clinics and meets. Annual membership is $35, which includes coverage by a group insurance policy. For swimmers age 19 and over. No competitive experience necessary. www.pacificmasters.org.

Palo Alto Run Club Noncompetitive, organized runs held each week with a monthly trail run. Runs vary from five to 12 miles or more. Individual membership is $22, family dues are $37. People of all ages and abilities are welcome. www.parunclub.com.

San Jose Inner City Outings Volunteered-based program sponsored by the Sierra Club to give access to outdoor activities to urban youth and adults. Includes backpacking, camping and biking in the Bay Area. http://ico.sierraclub.org/sanjose/.

Sierra Club Find domestic and international wilderness trips. Sierra Club offers guided backpacking, camping, sailing, bicycling, canoe and many other types of trips. Regular membership is $39. www.sierraclub.org.

Silicon Valley Hash House Harriers The "hare," or leader, sets a five-mile trail (usually with chalk or flour), gets a 12-minute head start, then the rest of the pack set off to find their way to the hare with much beer drinking along the way. At the end they reconvene and drink more. Based on the old English game of "Hare and Hounds." They claim to be "a drinking club with a running problem." www.sv3.com.

Silicon Valley Triathlon Club SVTC has more than 600 members and is the largest triathlon club in Northern California. Holds trainings, group swims, rides and runs along with other clinics for members throughout the year. Regular membership is $35 for Oct. 1-Dec. 31, and $65 for Jan 1-Dec 31. Prices also vary by age bracket. www.svtriclub.org.

Stevens Creek Striders Runs every Saturday at 8:30am at the Stevens Creek County Park and other events throughout the year. Membership is $20. www.stevenscreekstriders.org.

TRIbe Triathlon Club For serious athletes committed to the sport. Year membership fee is $70 and includes coached track workouts, clinics and race reimbursements.www.tribe triathlon.com
