2006 Fall Arts Issue

Classical Music, Opera and Dance

Six Reasons in '06 to go to a classical concert this fall

1) Scary Music. For a Halloween concert, the Saratoga Symphony gets downright satanic with Boccherini's House of the Devil Symphony, Paganini's The Witches, Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre and Peter Lindpaintner's The Vampire Overture. Lindpaintner, an obscure 19th-century German composer noted mostly for his bassoon compositions, somehow found his way into blood-sucking lore with his 1828 opera Der Vampyr, almost 75 years before Bram Stoker lapped the field. Oct. 29.

2) A Centennial. Dmitri Shostakovich was born Sept. 25, 1906, and Symphony Silicon Valley is celebrating with guest soloist Gary Hoffman performing the Russian composer's Cello Concerto no. 1. Guest conductor Martin West leads the orchestra. Oct. 26 and 28-29.

3) Acoustics. Mission Chamber Orchestra performs Mozart's Requiem in St. Joseph Cathedral Dome, a unique sonic venue for one of the great works of the classical literature. This concert, a fifth anniversary memorial for Sept. 11, also features Terry Vosbein's Prayer for Peace and Craig Bohmler's Songs of Loss. Sept. 9.

4) Elvis Has Not Left the Building. The other Elvis—Costello—wrote Il Sogno for the Italian dance company Aterballetto to accompany its adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream. The full-length work gets its West Coast premiere from Eric Kujawsky and the always adventurous Redwood Symphony. Oct. 8.

5) World Premieres. The San Jose Chamber Orchestra and the Choral Project collaborate on The Songbird and the Eagle, with words by Rick Davis and music by Kim D. Sherman. The commissioned work takes off from a Buddhist tale and evokes the idea of peace through individual action. Dec. 8-10. Philharmonia Baroque, which usually dips into the past, commissions a new work for the first time: To Hell and Back, a redo of The Rape of Persephone by Dead Man Walking composer David Heggie, with librettist Gene Scheer. Patti LuPone will sing the lead. Nov. 2.

6) The Willis. Ballet San Jose (having jettisoned the unwieldy Silicon Valley in its name) presents the granddaddy of romantic ballets, Giselle, based on the somewhat creepy (if you stop and really think about it) Slavic tale of the "Willis," young women who perished on their wedding days who can't stay in their graves and lure young men to their demises on midnight highways. Who says classical dance is stuffy? Nov. 16-19.
