Taiko's Time: San Jose Japanese drumming troupe turns 35 with a bang

2008 Fall Arts Issue

Intro

THIS YEAR'S fall arts season brings both change and continuity. Timothy Near prepares to pass the baton at San Jose Repertory Theatre to newly announced artistic director Rick Lombardo. Susan Krane takes over as the new head of the San Jose Museum of Art, and Montalvo Arts Center is on the lookout for a new executive director, as Robert L. Sain announced his retirement last week after a two-year stint. Meanwhile, the San Jose Mariachi and Latin Music Festival, turning 17 this year, Opera San José, celebrating its 25th season, San Jose Taiko, rejoicing in 35 years, and American Musical Theatre of San Jose, keeping frisky with the "take it off" musical "The Full Monty" after almost three-quarters of a century—all keep on keeping on.

Our Fall Arts Guide offers a thorough yet handy look at the upcoming schedules for the South Bay's theater, dance and opera companies, its orchestras, its museums and its literary specials. Music editor Mike Connor gives his picks for the big concerts of the season. Film critic Richard von Busack surveys the crowded field of Hollywood and indie movies set to break on local screens.
