News From Silicon Valley's Neighborhoods Slug on Campus Campbell--The Campbell Union High School District has put the public bidding for Blackford High School on hold until September, because UC-Santa Cruz has expressed interest in leasing the school. Blackford operates as an alternative school, serving 250 to 300 students, but the school is also being leased by a catering company, a Chinese church and a sports center. Valley Merger Cupertino--Joint Venture: Silicon Valley, a nonprofit organization committed to creating opportunities for all in the new economy, has merged with its Civic Action Network.The new board currently has a search underway for a new chief executive officer. Former president and CEO Ruben Barrales left the group to take a position in the Bush administration. Joint Venture will continue to produce the benchmark Index of Silicon Valley, which reports on regional trends. Shark Bytes Willow Glen--Willow Glen artist Carlos Perez will have created at least one of the 100 pieces of art when San Jose's new, free public art debuts around the city August 1. Silicon Valley Community Newspaper Group has commissioned Perez to fashion one of his six submissions into reality. Based on the successful "Cows on Parade" public art exhibition in New York and Chicago, SharkByte Art will feature artistic renderings on 100 6-foot-long fiberglass sharks to be displayed throughout San Jose's sidewalks, parks and plazas from August through November 2001.
