Hours: Mas Sake is open for lunch Mon-Fri 11:30am-2:30pm and for dinner Mon-Thu 5-10pm and Fri-Sat 5-11pm; Icon Nightclub is open Tue, Fri-Sat, 9pm-3am; hours vary on other nights.
Palo Alto rock club the Edge was legend. Once it closed to make way for the Icon Supperclub, a lot of very sad people never looked back. Why bother? The new upscale jazz club and elegant restaurant weren't exactly built for them. Hell, there was even a dress code--a button-down deterrent sure to keep out the rock element. But now that word's out that the Icon is bringing back the rock, the old crowd is slowly returning.
Walking into the renovated hangarlike space for the first time can be a real shocker. The initial impression is "Am I in the right place?!" But the magic of Edge concerts past still lingers inside these walls, and the images start to fuse, reconciling the two clubs into one. Now, the Icon stands as a new and improved version of the Edge.
Bright and open, the Icon's subtle light blue lavender, deep cobalt-blue and silvery-gray color scheme is complemented by rich woods. It's one of the nicest venues in the South Bay, and it turns out that the overall atmosphere and acoustics are better suited for raucous rock & roll than intimate jazz music.
With two rooms, three dance floors and four bars--including one tucked away in the darkened upstairs balcony area--the Icon has become a haven for dancers, too. Regular dance nights are Fridays, Saturdays and the ever-popular $2 Tuesdays--the only night that currently allows ages 18-20. The club's been hosting veteran rock acts like Kings X and Dokken and plans to start booking more local bands on a regular basis.
Music's not the only draw. While the Edge's menu was limited to say the least, the Icon houses a hip sushi joint called Mas Sake. As an added bonus to the extensive menu, the eatery recently introduced the Liquid Lounge, a DJ night held every Thursday. For smokers, there's a large, comfortable heated patio with plenty of tables and chairs. The Icon is also available for private events and offers full catering and a large dining area.
