News From Silicon Valley's Neighborhoods Fight or Flight Sunnyvale--NASA's scheme to expand a highly "underutilized" facility incensed activists at a packed town meeting last week. With a master plan for a campus dedicated to aeronautics, information technology, nanotechnology, space sciences, life sciences and astrobiology, NASA reps presented a handful of development options for Moffet Field, the most ambitious of which proposes doubling the current size of the site and ushering in up to 15,000 more jobs. Housing is perhaps the biggest beef of frustrated locals who argued that such a number of newcomers would be akin to erecting a whole new town. Cut It Out Willow Glen--Who ever heard of a Haircut-A-Thon? Known for battling bone marrow diseases, the FX Salon & Day Spa hair-snipping madness is coming on July 23 to aid the National Marrow Donor Program and Lucile Salter Packard Children's Foundation. Complementing the fundraiser on the corner of Branham and Ross, a dunk tank, wheelchair soccer, children's finger painting, silent auction and more are all in memory of an FX employee whose 5-month-old daughter succumbed to a rare blood disorder. A bone marrow drive, topping off the event, remains as always in dire need of donors. Smooth Operator Los Gatos--It undoubtedly took a way with words to sway the Los Gatos City Council to drum up $50,000 toward the purchase of Bear Creek Redwoods. At a council meeting July 10, Daphne Muehle of Peninsula Open Space Trust secured the 50 Gs, which will help repay her organization's $10 million loan for the purchase of 805 redwood-filled acres off Bear Creek Road. POST will eventually turn the property over to the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District.
