Stanford Lively Arts

AS BEFITS a well-endowed university, Stanford runs an arts series that rivals that of a large city. This year's Stanford Lively Arts roster is studded with big sparkling names, like an engagement ring from Harry Winston.

Leading the way is Wynton Marsalis, the mainstream face of high jazz, who appears next May with his Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra (Marsalis also appears with his sextet at Montalvo in late October). Other heavyweights include the classical duo of cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han, who recently pulled off a major new chamber music festival, Music@Menlo; esteemed classical pianist Garrick Ohlsson; sitar masters Ravi and Anoushka Shankar; and the traditional vocal glories of Chanticleer's annual Christmas concert. The full schedule and a variety of subscriber options can be accessed at livelyarts.stanford.edu. What follows is just a selected sampling of the more intriguing offerings.
