Monterey Jazz Festival

NOW IN ITS 46th year, the venerable festival continues to draw a wide spectrum of names, not just in straight-ahead jazz but also in blues, funk and soul. This year's lineup is headed by the Herbie Hancock Quartet with Bobby Hutcherson, Nnenna Freelong, the Neville Brothers, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Along Came Betty and the Global Funk Council. Fusion fans will make a point of catching the reunion of guitarist John McLaughlin and tabla player Zakir Hussain. The event sprawls over seven stages and three days.

San Francisco Jazz Festival

TWO AND A HALF weeks of serious big-city jazz. The highlights include two piano greats in solo concerts, McCoy Tyner (Oct. 23) and Cecil Taylor (Oct. 30); Maria Muldaur and Dan Hicks working out on the Peggy Lee songbook (Nov. 2); and a supertrio of Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette (Nov. 9).
