For 20 years, the Bay Area-based metal quartet Metallica has remained a constant in a sea of change. Drawn to its hard, relentless, masculine and brutal material, the band's largely blue-collar fan base is a consistently loyal breed that has stuck with them through controversial haircuts, collaborations with the San Francisco Symphony, Lars Ulrich's crusade against file-sharing and the departure of longtime bassist Jason Newsted. That loyalty has been justly rewarded; remember when Metallica played the parking lot of the Tower Records at Blossom Hill and Santa Teresa from the stage of a flatbed truck? The latest in a career full of fan-appreciation shows was a four-night run at the Fillmore to debut songs from St. Anger with new bassist Robert Trujillo. The new album is scheduled to drop on June 10, and Metallica has been everywhere, from the Raiders AFC Championship game at the Oakland Coliseum to San Quentin. The band spearheads the 2003 Summer Sanitarium tour with Mudvayne, Deftones, Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit.
