So Long, SoFA

SoFA Street Fair

By Sarah Quelland

The sun is setting on this popular downtown festival. In its 10th and final year, the annual celebration of music and arts reflects on its grassroots origins as it prepares for one last fling. Perhaps this year's hottest attraction will be Zero magazine's outdoor stage. The popular music mag is bringing legendary punk band X (pictured) into town for the occasion. X's John Doe, Exene, Billy Zoom and D.J. Bonebrake are touring to support new reissues of their first three groundbreaking albums. Zero also lined up local punk heroes No Use for a Name, rowdy hicksters the Shitkickers and Interscope Records' dredg (Insolence was scheduled to perform, but due to other commitments, the band had to cancel). With high-profile bands playing on outside stages and inside downtown clubs, the SoFA Street Fair has a reputation for showcasing some of the best live music this valley has to offer. Other activities include dance and theater performances, poetry readings and a street bazaar where local merchants peddle their colorful wares. This year also marks the return of real sofas on the street and the adopt-a-sofa contest, where winners get to take home a couch.

September 16; 11am-7pm; South First Street between San Carlos and Reed streets, San Jose; $10 doors/$8 adv.
